Here are a few Orthodontic Treatment Frequently Asked Questions about orthodontics:
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that everyone get an orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. Usually orthodontic treatment is not started at this age, but there are some instances where treatment would highly benefit that person at that young age. We don’t want to miss out on that “window of opportunity” to catch something early before it becomes a bigger problem.
No, the jaws are done growing around age 8-9 years old. At that age, there are usually 12-16 more permanent teeth that need to erupt. If you see crowding, cross-bites, overjets or underbites at age 7-9 it will most likely get worse as the bigger, permanent teeth erupt.
Yes. Some orthodontic issues require early intervention, which is called Phase I treatment. We can do growth modification treatment to correct: cross-bites, under-bites, excessive overbites, noticeable spacing, space maintenance, crowding, and tongue-thrusting or thumb-sucking habits. At this young age, the teeth and the bones can move better, faster, and with less sensitivity. However, if a patient is not yet ready for treatment, we will follow that patient’s growth and development until the time is right for treatment to begin.
Most children who have Phase I treatment will also need braces in their teenage years when all of their baby teeth are out. However, usually this 2nd orthodontic treatment is less complex and not as sensitive or as long because of the Phase I treatment. After Phase I treatment we will continue to monitor your child and make further treatment recommendations as time goes on.
Getting braces does not hurt. Some patients may become a little sore after getting their braces on, but that usually goes away quickly. If needed, you can take Ibuprofen every 4-6 hours for the soreness. You don’t need any prescription medication for orthodontics.
It is impossible to give an exact price for treatment until the initial consultation visit. We have several payment plan options available to accommodate your individual needs. We will review those options with you and your insurance policy to help maximize your benefits and file your claims for you.
We accept almost all insurances and subtract the insurance benefit from the total cost. We bill them directly for your convenience.
Every patient is different in this regard, but most of the time, we can align our patients’ teeth without any extractions.
Treatment times differ from patient to patient, but our average treatment time is around 18 months.
Most of our patients are scheduled every 6-8 weeks instead of the conventional 4 weeks. We want to make getting braces or Invisalign as convenient as possible for our patients. We know you have very busy schedules.
Yes. We understand your busy schedule and are happy to help make the most of your time. If you are unable to make your child’s appointment but want an update on how his/her treatment is going, you can always just call us.
Absolutely. No one should miss school, work, or anything special just because he/she got braces.
Of course not! That’s gross.
Yes. Some athletes may have to get a mouth guard, and people playing certain musical instruments may need to make slight adjustments.
Yes – at least twice a year.
You don’t need a referral from a dentist to make an appointment at our office. Anyone can call in who has concerns about their teeth or their child’s teeth. However, we’ll always make sure that all of your significant dental work is completed before we start orthodontic treatment.
No. A large portion of our patients are adults. It’s never too late.
Yes. A tooth with a crown or filling will move just like a natural tooth.
