Professional vs. DIY Teeth Whitening Kits

What is the best option for you?

Many DIY and take-home whitening kits are available, but they’re never as good as systems provided by a whitening specialist. Over-the-counter whitening solutions are weaker and less concentrated. So while they can slightly brighten your teeth, it takes longer, and the results are far less effective.

On the other hand, professional teeth whitening kits have the power to whiten teeth by several shades in a shorter amount of time. The results are also easier to maintain, making this option more cost-effective. You could try two or three kits from a store (and only get half of the results) or turn to your dental specialist for help.

FAQ About Teeth Whitening in Las Vegas, NV

Is teeth whitening the right choice for you?
  • When should I whiten my teeth?
The most common reasons for teeth whitening include:

If you’re planning to get a crown, dental bonding, or dental veneers. The new restoration is made to match neighboring teeth, and it’s best to whiten your enamel first. This way, your upcoming dental work can be white from the start.

If there’s a big event on your calendar like a wedding, job interview, or graduation, and you want to make a good impression. For special occasions, you may also want to look your best for the photos and memories to come.

If you’ve started orthodontic treatment and want to jump-start your smile makeover by whitening your teeth while in braces.

If you’ve stopped smoking cigarettes and want your smile to look just as young as you feel.

  • How do you get the most out of teeth whitening?
Here are a few ways to ensure your teeth respond better to professional teeth whitening:

Drink lots of water. Avoid dark liquids like tea, wine, coffee, soda, etc. If you absolutely must have one, drink it through a straw.

Schedule a cleaning with our hygienist (we usually recommend that most people have a checkup every six months). It’s a good time to touch up your whitening at home after the cleaning.

If you’re whitening at home, use the system as directed. Don’t overfill the trays. Also, be sure to wear the trays for the correct amount of time.

Before we start your whitening treatment, we use a shade guide to record the current color of your enamel. After treatment, we record the new shade. This way, you can see just how well professional teeth whitening works at our dental office.

  • Are teeth sensitive after whitening?
Some people find that whitening their teeth causes tooth sensitivity. To prevent this, we recommend using a sensitivity formulated toothpaste for at least 1-2 weeks leading up to the whitening treatment and during the entire course of whitening. This helps protect sensitive nerve endings and lessens the common side effect.

Exposed root surfaces are another reason for sensitive teeth. When you whiten, the whitening product mustn’t come in contact with these areas. Tooth roots won’t change color and are very tender when it comes to external stimuli. If these areas are an aesthetic concern, we may recommend covering them with dental bonding, a white filling, or a gingival graft.

  • Is teeth whitening right for you?
Whitening is safe for adults and teens with healthy teeth and gums. However, before you start any teeth whitening treatment, we’ll need to make sure your smile is free of disease or decay.

If you’ve been thinking about whitening your teeth, just ask! Your checkup is a great time to start. If you’re ready to begin, we can even fit you for custom whitening trays on the same day. Call us today!
